a few days in Italy, good as gold
Last week while visiting friends south of Bern, Switzerland we had a few unplanned days to use before heading back to England. Instead of driving toward England, on the spur of the moment we opted to go in the opposite direction, to Lake Maggiore in Italy.
Our route across the Alps included going by car-train through a tunnel from Kandersteg, then we drove over Simplon Pass, into Italy and down a narrow mostly one-lane winding road to the lake. Lodging was at water’s edge in Baveno, with easy access to the special islands of Pescatori, Bella & Madre. The weather was showery, which was great for us. Still warm enough for swimming, yet threatening enough to keep the tourist numbers down on the islands. Most of one day was spent on Isola Bella, touring the incredible palazzo and gardens.
Europe has so many fantastic opportunities. It’s great to be able to drive a relatively short distance through outrageous scenery into another country, with a different language, culture and food. Then, of course, there’s the history. For instance, to be in a place where Napolean hung out is very special.
